While devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones have become indispensable tools of modern work life, prolonged interaction with these technological devices can pave the way for various adverse effects on human health. In addition to the conveniences technology brings, the effects of the light emitted by screens on our biological rhythms have emerged as one of the most important occupational health issues of the modern era.

The Role of Screen-Based Devices in the Workplace

As digitalization gains momentum, the use of screen-based devices has become essential in virtually every occupational group, from office workers to field staff. The amount of time spent in front of screens throughout the day—whether preparing reports, responding to emails, conducting data analysis, or managing operational processes—is steadily increasing. While it is well known that constant screen use leads to poor posture, the deeper effects of the light spectrum emitted by screens on eye and brain functions are often overlooked. The human body naturally possesses a biological clock programmed by daylight, and prolonged exposure to artificial light sources can profoundly disrupt this delicate balance.

The Concept of Blue Light and Its Biological Effects

Blue light, which is part of the visible light spectrum, is actually a natural component of sunlight and helps us stay awake, focus, and improve mental performance during the day. However, the lighting systems used in the screens of technological devices emit large amounts of artificial blue light. The human eye lacks the natural ability to adequately filter these high-energy, short-wavelength rays. Consequently, the blue light reflected from screens reaches the retina—the back layer of the eye—directly, continuously signaling to the brain that it is daytime. This situation causes the body’s biological clock to become disrupted, particularly during work that extends past regular office hours or into the evening.

The Hidden Dangers Beyond Dry Eyes

The harms of staring at computer, tablet, and phone screens all day are, as a common misconception, associated solely with physical eye discomfort. Many workers attribute symptoms such as burning, stinging, and dry eyes—which they experience at the end of the workday—solely to screen fatigue. However, the physical effects of screen exposure are not limited to dry eyes. The metabolic changes caused by artificial light sources at the cellular level and on the nervous system lay the groundwork for much more complex health issues. Behind these superficial symptoms, a silent process is at work that directly targets an individual’s overall quality of life and psychological resilience.

The Melatonin Hormone and Sleep Cycle Disruption

The most important factor in a healthy sleep pattern is the hormone melatonin, which is secreted by the brain’s pineal gland. This special hormone begins to be synthesized in a dark environment, preparing the body for rest. However, the intense blue light emitted by screens severely suppresses the production of melatonin—the hormone our bodies release at night that determines sleep quality. Due to exposure to artificial lighting, the brain perceives that the sun has not set and is unable to initiate the hormonal preparations necessary for falling asleep. This disruption of the natural sleep cycle makes it difficult to enter deep sleep—the restorative phase of sleep—and can lead to a complete disruption of the biological rhythm.

The Vicious Cycle of Chronic Insomnia and Morning Fatigue

Insufficient secretion of the hormone melatonin directly leads to a longer time to fall asleep and frequent awakenings throughout the night. Over time, this condition can evolve from a temporary problem into chronic insomnia. Since sleep is the most vital process for mental and physical renewal, poor-quality sleep prevents the body from fully repairing itself. As a natural consequence, employees often experience the syndrome of waking up tired in the morning and starting the day without energy. A mind and body that have not had sufficient rest lose a significant portion of their ability to cope with the challenges of the day.

Loss of Focus in the Field and at the Office

The most noticeable effects of poor-quality sleep during work hours are a slowdown in cognitive functions and difficulty sustaining attention. Whether it’s a financial expert performing complex calculations at a desk or a technician operating heavy machinery in the field, a decline in cognitive function is observed in every individual suffering from sleep deprivation. Loss of focus in the field or in the office weakens decision-making processes, impairs problem-solving abilities, and dangerously prolongs reaction times. Especially in sensitive tasks that require close attention, such cognitive impairments not only reduce individual productivity but also jeopardize the overall functioning of the work environment.

Critical Increase in the Risk of Workplace Accidents

One of the key focuses of the field of occupational health and safety is minimizing errors caused by human factors. Sleep disorders triggered by exposure to blue light—and the resulting loss of concentration—directly contribute to the occurrence of unwanted incidents in the workplace. Workplace accidents resulting from fatigue and inattention can lead to irreversible consequences in terms of both personal safety and property damage. Slower reflexes and a reduced ability to anticipate danger are considered critical risk factors, particularly for employees working in high-risk workplaces.

Health and Safety Regulations for Work Involving Display Screen Equipment

Protecting employees from health risks associated with screen-based devices is an important issue addressed under relevant legal regulations. According to current legislation, employers are required to organize the work environment in accordance with ergonomic principles and to inform employees about potential risks. Technical measures such as selecting appropriate lighting systems, optimizing screen brightness based on ambient light, and using screen filters are considered within this framework. However, the issue is not limited to technical measures alone; work organization and work schedules must also be planned according to employees’ physiological needs.

Individual Precautions and Ergonomic Awareness

In addition to measures taken at the organizational level, it is also extremely important for employees to develop individual awareness to protect their own health. Limiting digital screen use outside of work hours—especially during times close to bedtime—helps restore the natural course of melatonin secretion. Enabling blue light filter features on devices and performing eye-resting exercises at regular intervals during work are among the practical solutions frequently recommended by experts. Developing proper work habits makes a significant contribution to maintaining both physical health and mental well-being in the long term.

While the use of screen-based devices has become inevitable due to the demands of the increasingly digital business world, it is possible to manage the effects of this situation on human health. It is a scientific fact that blue light emitted by screens does more than just cause simple eye strain; it suppresses the hormone melatonin, thereby reducing sleep quality, leading to chronic fatigue, and ultimately increasing the risk of workplace accidents. Accordingly, both employers and employees must be made aware of this hidden danger, and work environments must be restructured in accordance with ergonomic principles, regulatory requirements, and medical recommendations.

Günümüz iş dünyasının büyük bir bölümü, dijital ekranlar aracılığıyla yürütülen süreçlerden oluşmaktadır.
